Globalizing the Game

You may have noticed that NBA Allstar weekend looked a little different this year:

Three teams of all stars against each other in a round robin format: Team Stars, Team Stripes, and Team World.

Team Stripes and Team Stars were made up solely of American basketball stars, and Team World had the league’s foreign-born talents.

This is only the beginning of a major movement in the NBA: The globalization of the league, but more importantly, the game of basketball.

The Start of a Movement

Today, the NBA is the most international it has ever been with players you and the rest of the world recognize such as Victor Wembanyama, Luka Dončić, Nikola Jokić, and plenty others. In fact, almost a quarter of the entire league consists of foreign born players.

This special allstar game format is only the beginning of what the NBA has in store for you when it comes to globalizing the game; we want to connect fans from all over the world, and get more people in love with the game and the culturally rich communities that reside there.

So, What’s Next?

You may have heard the rumors of the NBA wanting to expand, and we aren’t just talking about the two expansion teams planned for next season, we have plans for something much bigger:

NBA Europe

A 10-12 team league that is based in Europe. This league is the first major step in truly connecting with fans outside the US and all around the globe.

It is one thing to see an exhibition match in person, but now we are bringing the league and all of its energy and culture to you.

This expansion will not only get more fans involved, but also attract and give more opportunities to global basketball players who will continue to shape the game as it keeps evolving with every new season.

What Does This Mean for Me?

Well whether you have been a lifelong fan or are just getting started, and whether you reside in the United States or another country, the NBA is the league for you, and it’s expanding faster than ever before.

So don’t just be a passive observer, take part in the momentum and be a fan in the stands; get involved with a sport that is not just loved in the United States, but around the world.

Expanding the Game: How You’ll Experience the NBA’s Global Future

As a basketball fan, you’re stepping into a moment where the NBA is more global, more connected, and more ambitious than ever. The league isn’t just growing internationally—you’re becoming part of a worldwide community that’s shaping the future of the game. And the NBA is building that future with you in mind.

You’ve already seen how international stars have transformed the league. When you watch Giannis Antetokounmpo dominate the paint, Nikola Jokić redefine the center position, or Luka Dončić control the floor with effortless creativity, you’re witnessing the impact of global talent. These players aren’t just representing their countries—they’re expanding the way you experience basketball.

To bring the game even closer to you, the NBA is accelerating its global presence through NBA Global Games. When the league brings live matchups to cities across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, you get the chance to feel the energy of an NBA arena without crossing an ocean. These games aren’t just exhibitions; they’re immersive celebrations designed to connect you with the league you love.

You also benefit from the NBA’s investment in grassroots development. Programs like Basketball Without Borders and NBA Academies are helping young athletes in your region sharpen their skills and pursue their dreams. Whether you’re a player, a coach, or simply a fan, these initiatives strengthen your local basketball community and open doors for the next generation.

AI VERSION OF PRESS RELEASE: I prompted Microsoft Copilot saying: “Hi Copilot, pretend you are the press secretary for the NBA and write me a 300-500 word blog post in second person from NBA talking about how they are going to globalize the league using the attached press release as a reference point” (I attached my press release from above to the message)
